Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about the SMaRTCert program.

What is SMaRTCert?

SMaRTCert™ is the Specialized Maintenance and Reporting Technician Certification — an industry-developed apprenticeship and credential preparing technicians for non-electrical maintenance, inspection, and reporting of solar PV, EVSE, and clean-energy infrastructure.

Is this an electrical apprenticeship?

No. SMaRTCert intentionally focuses on the non-electrical scope of work — cleaning, inspection, preventive maintenance, documentation, reporting, and asset management. Electrical work is not part of the SMaRTCert scope.

Do I get paid during the program?

Yes. SMaRTCert follows the registered apprenticeship model, which means you earn while you learn through paid on-the-job training with an employer partner.

Who can apply?

High school graduates, community college students, veterans, career changers, incumbent workers, and job seekers are all encouraged to apply.

Do I need prior experience?

No prior experience is required. SMaRTCert is designed as an entry-level career pathway, and the curriculum builds foundational skills before advancing into specialty tracks.

How long is the program?

Program length varies by track and employer, but combines classroom Related Technical Instruction with paid on-the-job training in a competency-based model.

How is certification earned?

Certification is earned by completing the curriculum and demonstrating competency across safety, inspection, maintenance, documentation, reporting, professionalism, and asset management.

Can employers participate?

Yes. Employers partner with SMaRTCert to sponsor apprentices, help shape the curriculum, and build a reliable pipeline of trained, safety-focused technicians. Visit the Employers page to learn more.
